When (and how) to pivot away from clinical practice

Not every pharmacist wants to spend their whole career behind the counter or on the ward — and that's not a failure of commitment. Recognising when it's time to pivot is the first, hardest step.

Separate burnout from misfit

Sometimes the problem is the specific workplace, not the profession. Before making a big pivot, rule out whether a different clinical setting would solve it.

Test the water before you leap

Volunteer for a project outside your usual scope, shadow someone in the field you're curious about, or take a short course. A pivot is less risky once you've confirmed you actually enjoy the destination.

Leave well

Pharmacy is a small, connected profession. Give proper notice, document your work clearly for whoever follows you, and keep the relationships — you'll likely cross paths again.
